Scope of Study

Summary:

The total number of business establishments, mid-March employment figures, and first quarter and annual payrolls are supplied in this data collection at the county, state, and national levels. Also provided are data on the number of establishments by employment-size class. Data are provided for most divisions of the economy, including agricultural services, mining, construction, manufacturing, transportation, public utilities, wholesale trade, retail trade, finance, insurance, real estate, and services. However, data are not included for agricultural production, railroad, government, or household employment.

Universe:

All business establishments with one or more paid employees in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and counties, excluding agriculture production, railroad, government, or household employment. All government hospitals are included beginning with 1989 data.

Data Collection Notes:

The codebook is provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet.

Business Register, Annual Company Organization Survey, Annual Survey of Manufactures, Current Business Surveys, United States Internal Revenue Service administrative records, and the Social Security Administration

Restrictions:

In accordance with U.S. Code, Title 13, Section 9, no data are shown that would disclose the operations of an individual employer. However, the number of establishments in an industry classification and the distribution of these establishments by employer-size class are not considered disclosures, and so this information may be released even though other information is withheld.

Version History:

  • 2006-01-18 File CB2701.ALL.PDF was removed from any previous datasets and flagged as a study-level file, so that it will accompany all downloads.
