Summary:   The National Public Education Financial Survey is an annual state-level collection of revenues and expenditures for public education, grades prekindergarten through 12. Revenues and expenditures are audited after the close of the fiscal year and are then submitted to the National Center for Education Statistics by each state education agency. Variables include local revenue sources such as property taxes, tuition, and fees, intermediate and state revenues, federal sources of income, and other sources of revenue. Expenditure categories reported on include instructional expenditures (salaries and benefits, supplies, and services), support services expenditures (for staff, students, and administration), noninstructional services (such as food service), direct program support, facilities acquisition, construction services, community services, direct cost programs, and exclusions from current expenditures. The average daily attendance is also provided.

The codebook and data collection instrument are provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Extent of Processing:  ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure.
