The Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) series was designed to provide comprehensive information on various aspects of postsecondary education in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside the United States. Data are available for both public and private two-year and four-year institutions. The HEGIS Fall Enrollment component for 1981 sought enrollment data from 3,294 institutions of higher education. Key data elements include number of full-time and part-time students by class level, sex, and race, as well as total number of students. Additional data include the institutions' type of accreditation and type of calendar system.
These data are available only to users at ICPSR member institutions. Because you are not logged in, we cannot verify that you will be able to download the data.

Scope of Study
Subject Terms: accreditation (institutions), academic disciplines, colleges, community colleges, demographic characteristics, higher education, postsecondary education, school enrollments, students, universities
Date of Collection:
Universe: All postsecondary institutions in operation in fall 1981 in the United States, the District of Columbia, and outlying territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside the United States.
Data Types: survey data
Data Collection Notes:
(1) There are 3,294 institutions represented in this dataset and multiple records per institution. (2) The variable 'PARTCODE' (column 79) in the data is coded exclusively as 'Z', which stands for the summary of all students enrolled.
Mode of Data Collection: self-enumerated questionnaires
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Original ICPSR Release: 1999-01-08
- 2005-09-12 SAS, SPSS, and Stata setup and portable files were created for this collection. Also, an ICPSR PDF codebook was created and added to the documentation for this collection.
