The Spokane and Kootenai County Regional Travel Survey, 2005, is a comprehensive survey of the travel patterns of households in Spokane County, Washington and Kootenai County, Idaho. The survey was conducted for the Spokane Regional Transportation Council (SRTC) over a three-month period, from April through June 2005. The data are drawn from 1,828 households within Spokane and Kootenai counties and contain information about 4,488 household members, 3,974 vehicles, and details regarding 19,638 trips made during a 24-hour period. The survey relied on the willingness of study area residents to (1) provide demographic information about the household, its members, and its vehicles during the recruitment stage, and (2) record all travel for a specific 24-hour period during the retrieval stage. Respondents were asked to provide detailed household information, including number of occupants, type of dwelling unit, number of vehicles available to household occupants, as well as the year and body type for each vehicle. Following the initial recruitment phase, survey participants received mailed questionnaires to aid in documenting travel information during the 24-hour assessment period. Respondents were instructed to record their mode of transportation, trip purpose, departure and arrival times, number of passengers, and parking cost. Demographic information for this study includes age, income, education, and employment status.

Study Purpose: The goal of this survey was to create a database containing accurate information on trips, trip characteristics, household characteristics, and person characteristics for a representative sample of households in Spokane and Kootenai Counties. These data will be used to update travel demand forecast models, to identify Transportation Improvement Plan priorities, and to inform other transportation planning and policy needs of the counties.
Sample: The targeted sample size was 1,800 households - of which 1,200 were sought from Spokane County and 600 from Kootenai County. To ensure an adequate minimum number of sampled households from Kootenai County, the proposed sample size was disproportionately distributed between the two counties. It was determined that 2,400 households would need to be recruited in order to result in 1,800 households with completed travel logs. A probability design was used to select a sample that would truly represent the survey universe. For additional information on sampling, please see the Original P.I. Documentation section of the ICPSR Codebook.
Weight: A weight variable (FINWGT) was developed to (1) expand the sample data to represent the total households in Spokane and Kootenai Counties, and (2) to account for over-sampling in Kootenai County. The Census 2000 data for these counties was used to calculate this factor. For additional information on weights, please see the Original P.I. Documentation section of the ICPSR Codebook.
Mode of Data Collection: computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI), mail questionnaire
Response Rates: The overall response rate was 25 percent -- as the product of the recruitment interview (34 percent) and the retrieval interview (72 percent). For additional information on response rates, please see the Original P.I. Documentation section of the ICPSR Codebook.
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
