Principal Investigator(s): United States Department of Commerce. Bureau of the Census
Summary: Master Area Reference Files (MARFs) link geographic areas with their respective numeric codes. This data collection is a school district equivalency file created for the 1980 Census of Population and Housing. The data contain geographic items from Summary Tape Files 1A and 3A as well as total population and housing unit counts. In addition to providing the standard MARF geographic data, the collection associates school district identification numbers with the lowest available levels of ce... (more info)

Scope of Study
Summary: Master Area Reference Files (MARFs) link geographic areas with their respective numeric codes. This data collection is a school district equivalency file created for the 1980 Census of Population and Housing. The data contain geographic items from Summary Tape Files 1A and 3A as well as total population and housing unit counts. In addition to providing the standard MARF geographic data, the collection associates school district identification numbers with the lowest available levels of census geography. Flags are provided where a geographic area is split between districts. The data are contained in 51 hierarchical files, one for each state and for the District of Columbia.
Subject Terms: census data, demographic characteristics, household composition, housing, housing conditions, population, minor civil divisions, Metropolitan Statistical Areas, school districts, states (USA)

- 1980
Date of Collection:
- 1980
Universe: All persons and housing units in the United States in 1980.
Data Types: census/enumeration data
Data Collection Notes:
(1) These hierarchical files contain seven record types sequenced as follows: (1) state (including the District of Columbia), (2) county, (3) minor civil division (MCD) or census county division (CCD), (4) place or segment within MCD/CCD or remainder of MCD/CCD, (5) census tract or block numbering area (BNA), (6) block group (BG) or, for areas not block-numbered, enumeration district (ED), and (7) school district or ZIP code. (2) The codebook is provided by ICPSR as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.
