Principal Investigator(s):

Summary:

This data collection is part of an omnibus study on German political attitudes and behavior, with a focus on the 1994 German Federal Parliament election. The series consists of two pre-election investigations (this study and GERMAN ELECTION STUDY, 1994: PRE-ELECTION STUDY [TREND INVESTIGATIONS] [ICPSR 2862]), the Politbarometer West (GERMAN ELECTION STUDY, 1994 [POLITBAROMETER WEST] [ICPSR 2843]), the Politbarometer East (GERMAN ELECTION STUDY, 1994 [POLITBAROMETER EAST] [ICPSR 2842]), and a post-election study (GERMAN ELECTION STUDY, 1994: POST-ELECTION STUDY [ICPSR 2860]). In this study, German citizens were asked to give their opinions regarding German political parties, the German federal government, and various topical political controversies. Among the topics covered were the following, derived from the summary appearing on the website of the Zentralarchiv fuer Empirische Sozialforschung an der Universitaet zu Koeln (English translation), at http://www.za.uni-koeln.de/: - satisfaction with the current federal government. - attitude toward a government led by the SPD (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands or Social Democratic Party) or CDU/CSU (Christlich Demokratischen Union Deutschlands or Democratic Christian Party/Christlich Soziale Union in Bayern or Bavarian Social Christian Union) as a prerequisite for positive economic development. - party and coalition preferences. - attitudes toward the speed limit, the so-called "large bugging operation," job creation programs, and assumed ability of the political parties in these controversies. - assessment of the probability of winning seats in the Federal Parliament by the FDP (Freie Demokratische Partei or Liberal Democratic Party), Alliance 90/Greens, and PDS (Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus or Democratic Socialist Party). - intent to participate in the election, and present political leanings. - respondent's residential status and presence at home in the four days immediately preceding the interview. - whether the respondent owned a telephone and type of connection, a fax and modem for a PC, or an ISDN connection. - whether the respondent had a listing in the telephone directory. - union membership. - employment in the civil service.
