Elementary and Secondary General Information System (ELSEGIS): Public School District Universe Data, 1978-1979 (ICPSR 2130)
Principal Investigator(s): United States Department of Education. National Center for Education Statistics
This dataset contains records for each public elementary and secondary school in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and outlying areas (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) in fall 1978. The project permits the educational community to draw statistically valid samples from which state or national estimates can be made and also provides a mailing list of school systems. Significant variables include name, address, county, grade span, size of system, number of schools, and Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) designation.
These data are available only to users at ICPSR member institutions. Because you are not logged in, we cannot verify that you will be able to download these data.

Scope of Study
Date of Collection:
Universe: All public elementary and secondary education agencies in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and United States territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) during 1978-1979.
Data Types: census/enumeration data
Data Collection Notes:
The codebook and data collection instrument are provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Original ICPSR Release: 2000-12-04
- Citations exports are provided above.
