In this study of voting practices and preferences respondents were asked: if they voted in the last election, who they voted for, if they were planning to vote in the upcoming election for the House of Representatives, and who they were likely to vote for in that election. They were asked to rate Reagan's performance as president on issues such as the economy, foreign affairs, and aid to the poor. They were also questioned about which political party they generally support and what they believe to be the nation's worst problem. Respondents to the follow-up questionnaire were again asked who they would be voting for as well as whether they perceived the state of the economy as getting better or worse. Demographic characteristics were also recorded.
One or more data files in this study are set up in a non-standard format, such as card image format. Users may need help converting these files before they can be used for analysis.

Data Collection Notes:
This survey was conducted in two parts, both of which are contained in this data set. Respondents were surveyed in September 1986, then a subsample was given the follow-up questionnaire one month later. The data as supplied to ICPSR contain problems which have not been resolved by the principal investigator. The weight variable for the original data was erased from the dataset, having been overwritten by the addition of the follow-up data. A weight variable is included for the follow-up data which must be used in analysis.
Sample: Households were selected by random digit dialing.
