ICPSR kicks off 50th anniversary celebration with reception, Web site
ICPSR is proud to kick off the celebration of our 50th anniversary with a reception at the American Sociological Association in Las Vegas on Sunday, and the launch of a Web site recounting the history of the Consortium.
The Web site features a personal history written by former interim Director Erik Austin, who retired in 2006 after 41 years at ICPSR; video interviews with several current and former Consortium leaders; and profiles of current staff members and researchers.
The site also lists upcoming celebratory events, including receptions at various professional meetings, the Official Representatives meeting in October, and a symposium in June 2012 featuring Nobel laureate and former ICPSR Council member Elinor Ostrom.
We hope you enjoy the Web site, and can join us at some of our 50th anniversary celebrations!

Sociometrics discounted subscription offer for ICPSR member institutions
ICPSR is pleased to announce that Sociometrics Corporation, a research and development firm specializing in social science research data and related products, is offering a free 30 day trial and a 50% discount on new subscriptions to their Social Science Electronic Data Library exclusively to ICPSR members.
The Social Science Electronic Data Library (SSEDL) contains more than 680 premier health and social science datasets from more than 285 studies, within 9 topically-focused data archives. These impressive collections were funded by various institutes and centers of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Search and retrieval at the level of the individual variable by topic, type and keyword was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). While many ICPSR members have already discovered the research-based products and services offered through subscription to Sociometrics, this offer will enable those who have not, to experiment with this rich data collection during a 30 day free trial period, or have access for a whole year with minimal investment! The 50% discount will be good for the first year's subscription.
More information on the Social Science Electronic Data Library can be found on the Sociometrics Web site.

A reminder about proxy servers
ICPSR does not support proxy servers. Please do not use proxy servers when directing users to our site. Because our Web site uses cookies to manage authentication, the intrusion of a proxy server can prevent users from successfully logging in and downloading data. Links to ICPSR should point to:
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/ICPSR/
not
http://www-0.proxy.yourschool.edu.icpsr.umich.edu/etc
Or anything along those lines.
Over the past few months, we've received reports of users unable to login; these problems have almost entirely been due to access via a proxy server, and have been resolved by sending the users directly to the ICPSR Web site.
We'd also like to point out that although ICPSR uses IP-based authentication, we also flag accounts as being part of the consortium. Flagged accounts can download from anywhere for six months after their last on-campus login. Thus proxy servers are not needed for off-campus access. End users merely need to log on from a campus computer once per semester.
Proxy servers are also unnecessary for reporting campus utilization of ICPSR resources. ICPSR provide its own reporting utilities on the OR site, and our utilities include off-campus downloads in the reports.
If you have a link to ICPSR on your Web site that directs users through a proxy server, please update the link to go directly to ICPSR, so that your users will be able to successfully download data.

International Archive of Education Data taken down
Several years ago ICPSR discontinued support for the International Archive of Education Data (IAED) Web site. The site was sponsored through a contract with the National Center for Education Statistics which was not renewed. All ICPSR data collections included in this site are still available to the membership (via the ICPSR Web site) and we will continue to respond to user questions about these data.

ICPSR Council Elections -- Call for Nominations
Dear Colleagues,
As you are aware, the ICPSR Council serves as the executive committee for ICPSR member institutions. The Council sets general policy for the Consortium, approves fees and budgets, and performs other duties. The Council consists of twelve members serving four-year terms. Six new members are elected by the Official Representatives every second year.
The Nominating Committee solicits your suggestions of persons with the experience, ability, and wisdom to serve on the Council. Responsibility and willingness to work are also vital. The Council meets three times each year, and members must devote time between meetings to review materials and undertake committee tasks.
The best way for the Nominating Committee to prepare a strong slate is to have suggestions from Official Representatives and other friends of the Consortium. We seek a diversity of people and perspectives. You may nominate someone from your own institution, or anyone you think is qualified. All Council members must be affiliated with member institutions. Council members need not be current or former Official Representatives, but they should be active supporters of the social science research enterprise.
The slate of six nominees will be mailed to Official Representatives during early fall 2011, and the slate will be voted upon by electronic ballot following the OR Meeting in October, during which there will be an opportunity for write-in nominations, as before. Newly elected members of Council will be seated at the first meeting of Council in 2012.
The Nominating Committee also nominates one of the continuing members to serve a two-year term as Council Chair. We welcome your suggestions about who should serve in this position.
These are the members of the Nominating Committee (two more members will be added to the Nominating Committee at the time of the March 2011 Council meeting):
- Francine Berman (bermaf@rpi.edu)
- Thomas LaVeist (tlaveist@jhsph.edu)
- Jeffrey Moon (moonj@queensu.ca)
- Lori M. Weber (lweber@csuchico.edu)
- Ann Wolpert, Chair (awolpert@mit.edu)
- Christopher Zorn (zorn@psu.edu)
You should feel free to communicate directly with the members of the Nominating Committee (listed above), but it will help us if you send your suggestions to a special email address we have created: councilnominees@icpsr.umich.edu.
In doing so, please provide a brief summary of the individual's qualifications, and make sure that the nomination reaches us by March 31, 2011. It would also be very helpful if you explained in your nomination why this person's expertise would be valuable to ICPSR.
For your information, a list of the current members of the Council is below.
Thank you very much for your help with this important task.
Sincerely,
George Alter
Acting Director, ICPSR

Call for ICPSR Miller and Flanigan Awards Nominations
Dear Colleagues,
As part of its mission to support the social sciences, ICPSR presents biennial awards to individuals who have distinguished themselves in their service to the social science community. We are seeking your nominations for these two awards.
The Warren E. Miller Award for Meritorious Service to the Social Sciences was initiated in 1993 to recognize individuals who have had a profound impact on social science research and infrastructure. Warren E. Miller, a founder of ICPSR and its first Executive Director, demonstrated throughout his career exemplary service to the social science community and a talent for building institutions that have survived beyond his direct involvement and continue to prosper.
The William H. Flanigan Award for Distinguished Service as an ICPSR Representative was established in 1995 and acknowledges significant contributions of individuals representing ICPSR member institutions. The award is named after William H. Flanigan, who served as ICPSR Official Representative from the University of Minnesota for 37 years, from ICPSR's inception in 1963 until 2000. He also served as Chair of the ICPSR Council from 1991 to 1993.
Visit our website for more information on previous award recipients.
The ICPSR Prizes Committee, charged with selecting candidates for these awards, is newly constituted in odd numbered years and includes the following members for 2011: Mr. Jeff Moon and Professor Rogelio Saenz, ICPSR Council representatives; Professor Steven Ruggles and Ms. Diane Geraci (Chair), previous Miller Award Recipient and Flanigan Award Recipient respectively; and Mary Morris, ICPSR staff representative.
Please send your nominations to this special email address: mf-awards@icpsr.umich.edu and include a brief summary of the individual's qualifications and explanation of why the nominee is a worthy recipient. The Prizes committee will consider the nominations, make a final determination of the award winners, and inform ICPSR Council of their decision. The awards will be given during the ICPSR Biennial Meeting of Official Representatives held October 5-7, 2011 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Nominations are due no later than March 25.
We welcome your recommendations of outstanding individuals for these two awards.
Sincerely,
Diane Geraci
Mary Morris
Jeff Moon
Steve Ruggles
Rogelio Saenz

2011 ICPSR OR Meeting: Save the Date and Provide Feedback
Dear ORs and DRs:
The 2011 Biennial Meeting of Official Representatives is scheduled for October 5-7, 2011. This meeting will be held onsite in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Program content planning is actively underway, and ICPSR welcomes your feedback such that the program committee can assemble content most meaningful to you.
Please respond to this short (13 questions) questionnaire no later than Wednesday, December 15, 2010.
For those of you new to ICPSR, a biennial meeting at our headquarters on the campus of the University of Michigan is held with the goal of training ICPSR Official and Designated Representatives (OR and DRs) on using social sciences data resources available through our Web site and updating them on future plans of ICPSR.

ICPSR and MARC
ICPSR has recently added a number of export functions for study-level metadata. On the search results page, you can now export results as either MARC21 XML or comma-delimited files (with a maximum of 500 results). This export feature appears at the base of the right-hand column on the search results page. From the study home page, you can now export a study-level metadata record in a variety of formats, including DDI, Dublin Core, and MARC21 XML.
These export options replace ICPSR's previous method of disseminating MARC records. The changes are:
- We now provide MARC21 XML, not true MARC.
- The new MARC21 XML doesn't include all fields previously indexed; it's a concise metadata record.
- We no longer submit our MARC to OCLC.
- We no longer have our MARC reviewed/corrected by library staff at the University of Michigan.
- Users can easily build custom sets of MARC21 XML, rather than having to re-import all ICPSR metadata.
- Users can obtain updated XML at will, rather than waiting for an annual batch from ICPSR.
At the beginning of 2011, our staff will generate two large XML files:
- a file containing all ICPSR metadata as MARC21 XML
- a file containing all studies added or updated in 2010 as MARC21 XML
We'll link those files from the OR site, so that the 500 result limit doesn't prevent users from obtaining the full metadata. In the meantime, please consider taking a moment to look over the MARC21 XML, which is linked from the study search results page and from each study home page. If you see any flaws with the XML, please don't hesitate to let us know. The new setup makes it very easy for ICPSR to globally update our XML, and we'd like to ensure that the XML is suitable for our institutions' library catalogs.
If you have any questions/concerns, please email web-support@icpsr.umich.edu.
