			This study evaluated the Tribal Strategies Against Violence
 (TSAV) Initiative. The TSAV was a federal-tribal partnership, lasting
 from 1995 to 1999, designed to develop comprehensive strategies in
 tribal communities to reduce crime, violence, and substance abuse.
 This study involved four of the seven TSAV sites: the Chickasaw Nation
 in Oklahoma, Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes in Montana, the
 Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians in Michigan, and
 the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in North Dakota. A survey
 of TSAV stakeholders at the four sites was conducted in the summer and
 fall of 1999. The objectives of the survey were to gauge TSAV
 stakeholders' perceptions about the following: (1) the serious crime,
 violence, and quality of life issues in each community and the extent
 to which the local TSAV initiative had addressed those issues, (2) the
 intent and ultimate outcomes of the TSAV program, (3) obstacles to
 successful implementation of TSAV activities, and (4) decision-making
 processes used in planning and implementing TSAV locally. Offense data
 were also gathered at the Fort Peck site for 1995 to 1998 and at the
Grand Traverse Band site for 1997 to 1999.

			In 1999, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation started the Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS), a 20-year initiative which intends to expand access to higher education for high achieving, low-income minority students. In addition to its academic objectives, GMS also has the goal of creating future leaders in minority groups. The program is administered by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). In 2000, the first year of the program, over 4,000 grants were awarded to minority students who were entering college or continuing their undergraduate or graduate studies during the 2000-2001 academic year.  Since then, an additional 1,000 scholarships have been awarded to outstanding freshmen every year. Awardees can receive the scholarship for up to 5 years as an undergraduate and 4 years as a graduate student. The scholarship is renewable through graduate school in math, science, engineering, library science, and education.
To be eligible, students had to meet several qualifications. They must (1) be of African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, or Pacific Islander background; (2) be full-time students entering college or university; (3) have a GPA of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale; (4) be eligible for Pell Grants; (5) be leaders in community service, extracurricular, or other activities.
In order to see how GMS has impacted students and to know how to better prepare minority students for college, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has commissioned a survey of recipients. The survey was distributed to Cohort 1 (award year 2000), Cohort 2 (award year 2001), Cohort 3 (award year 2002), Cohort 5 (award year 2004), and Cohort 9 (award year 2008). Cohorts are composed of both recipients and non-recipients. Non-recipients are defined as individuals who were asked to go on to the scholar confirmation/verification phase, but did not become a scholar for one or more reasons. This is an ongoing survey with the fifth, and final, follow-up occurring 18 years after high school around the age of 36. The survey included questions that address the topics of (a) social, cultural, linguistic, economic background; (b) race/ethnicity and gender patterns; (c) high school preparation and experiences; (d) the role of financial aid; (e) college choice; (f) major choice; (g) engagement and leadership in college; (h) academic achievement, persistence, and completions; (i) graduate education plans; (j) career choice and transition to the workplace; and (k) democratic values and leadership after college.
For the first year of the program, GMS awarded 4,053 scholarships to freshman, continuing undergraduate students, and graduate students. Baseline, first follow-up, second follow-up, and longitudinal survey data have been collected from both recipients and non-recipients. Non-cognitive scores are also available for Cohort 1.

			In 1999, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation started the Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS), a 20-year initiative which intends to expand access to higher education for high achieving, low-income minority students. In addition to its academic objectives, GMS also has the goal of creating future leaders in minority groups. The program is administered by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). In 2000, the first year of the program, over 4,000 grants were awarded to minority students who were entering college or continuing their undergraduate or graduate studies during the 2000-2001 academic year.  Since then, an additional 1,000 scholarships have been awarded to outstanding freshmen every year. Awardees can receive the scholarship for up to 5 years as an undergraduate and 4 years as a graduate student. The scholarship is renewable through graduate school in math, science, engineering, library science, and education.
To be eligible, students had to meet several qualifications. They must (1) be of African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, or Pacific Islander background; (2) be full-time students entering college or university; (3) have a GPA of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale; (4) be eligible for Pell Grants; (5) be leaders in community service, extracurricular, or other activities.
In order to see how GMS has impacted students and to know how to better prepare minority students for college, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has commissioned a survey of recipients. The survey was distributed to Cohort 1 (award year 2000), Cohort 2 (award year 2001), Cohort 3 (award year 2002), Cohort 5 (award year 2004), and Cohort 9 (award year 2008). Cohorts are composed of both recipients and non-recipients. Non-recipients are defined as individuals who were asked to go on to the scholar confirmation/verification phase, but did not become a scholar for one or more reasons. This is an ongoing survey with the fifth, and final, follow-up occurring 18 years after high school around the age of 36. The survey included questions that address the topics of  (a) social, cultural, linguistic, economic background; (b) race/ethnicity and gender patterns; (c) high school preparation and experiences; (d) the role of financial aid; (e) college choice; (f) major choice; (g) engagement and leadership in college; (h) academic achievement, persistence, and completions; (i) graduate education plans; (j) career choice and transition to the workplace; and (k) democratic values and leadership after college.
Baseline, first follow-up, second follow-up, and longitudinal survey data have been collected from both recipients and non-recipients. Non-cognitive scores and College Board data are also available for Cohort 2.

			The Reports of the American Indian Family History Project
 was a study aimed at examining demographic trends among Native
 Americans families during the late 1800s and early 1900s utilizing
 census data, collected by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the
 Census Bureau. Specifically, this study observed the behavior of
 Native American families from the Colville, Creek, Crow, Hopi, and
 White Earth Chippewa tribes at the time of the 1885, 1900, 1910, and
 1930 censuses, although data were not available for all tribes in all
 years. Common among each dataset in the collection are variables on
 the respondent's age, sex, and family size. Also appearing in each
 dataset in the collection are variables describing the respondent's
 relation to the head of his or her household, number of children born
 to the respondent, and the familial status of the respondent's mother,
 father, and spouse. The data from 1900 and 1910 include socioeconomic
 variables relating to occupation, education, and home ownership. Also
 unique to the 1900 and 1910 data are variables that more specifically
 categorize the race and ethnicity of the respondent. Language and
 marital status variables appear in the 1900, 1910, and 1930 data as
well.

			This data collection focuses on juvenile justice systems 
 administered by federally recognized Indian tribes throughout the 
 United States. Responses were received from 93 tribes who indicated 
 that they administered some form of juvenile justice system and from 57 
 tribes who indicated that they did not. Variables in the data 
 collection include number of Indian juveniles aged 10-17 in the 
 jurisdiction, types of cases that the juvenile justice system exercised 
 jurisdiction over, type of court (tribal, state, federal), annual 
 budget and sources of funds for the court, number of court personnel, 
 types of legal statutes covering court activities, kinds of 
 diversionary options available to the court, and the circumstances 
 under which juveniles were held with adults. A separate file on

			This study was initiated by the administrator of a county
 jail in the Northern Plains of the United States who was concerned
 about the incidence of suicide behaviors in that facility,
 particularly among the American Indian population. It was a two-year
 project designed to evaluate the existing admissions suicide screening
 tool and to improve the instrument's cultural relevance for the
 American Indian population. The existing screening instrument used in
 the county jail to interview inmates at their intake was developed in
 New York. The main objective of the first year of the project was to
 determine if that instrument was culturally appropriate for the jailed
 American Indian population. The principal objective of the second year
 of the project was to determine whether the employment of different
 suicide screening protocols would make a difference in the responses
 of new detainees with regard to the likelihood of securing their
 honest reports of experiencing suicide ideation and its associated
 risk factors. For the duration of the project, all male and female
 inmates aged 18 and older who were booked into the jail went through
 the customary booking procedure that included the administration of
 the New York Suicide Prevention Screening Guidelines. In the first
 year of the project, researchers also administered a short self-report
 survey consisting of measures commonly associated with suicidal
 ideation. The self-report survey measured stress, anxiety, suicide
 ideation, hopelessness, and suicidal behavior history. The protocols
 in the second year of the project reflected efforts to test different
 screening conditions for four experimental groups and one control
 group of new detainees. The outcome variables of the short self-report
 survey consisted of measures of demographics, comfort experience
 during booking and the screening process, self-efficacy and management
 of depression, knowledge of mental health support available within the
 jail, and general well-being. In addition to the quantitative data
 collection, qualitative data were also collected to develop a
 straightforward assessment of suicide ideation criteria in this
specific jail setting using semi-structured focus group interviews.
