			The data for this study were gathered in 1966 from professionals in 23 organizations of various types, such as schools, hospitals, law firms, manufacturing firms, advertising firms, brokerage firms, public and private agencies, accounting firms, and a public library. The study focused on the structural and attitudinal aspects of professionalization, and on the organizational settings in which many professional occupations exist. The questionnaire measured the hierarchy of authority, the division of labor, the extent of organizational control and organizationally-defined procedures, the impersonality of interactions, and the technical competence required by the respondents' specific jobs. Demographic data include age group, graduate degrees if any, and membership in professional organizations.

			The Professional Worker Career Experience Survey (PWCES) contains responses from 752 working professionals who were surveyed between December 2003 and September 2004.  The survey contains a combination of data on personal education and work histories, family structure, employment and demographic characteristics, and variety of personality scales.  The data were collected originally as part of an investigation of the reasons for the under representation of women and minorities in the information technology (IT) workforce.
The survey instrument was made up of two separate sets of questions.  The first part, developed by the University of Kansas (KU) research team, gathered information on the following topics: work history and job characteristics, education history and experiences, family history and experiences, career choice influences, family and other non-work obligations, attitudes and perceptions of work experiences, life/family/work conflicts, job and career satisfaction, personal attitudes and beliefs, and demographic and salary information.
The second part of the survey consisted of the Strong Interest Inventory (SII), a widely used vocational counseling instrument that was developed and is maintained by Consulting Psychologists Press (CPP).  After completing the first part of the survey users were transferred to a site maintained by CPP and filled out responses to the SII online.  CPP then transferred these responses to the KU team and responses from the two parts were matched based on individual identifiers.
After the data collection phase was completed the KU research team cleaned the responses by examining consistency of responses. A number of additional variables were also constructed based on survey responses.
Respondents were classified as either IT or non-IT employees based on self-reported current career field (one of 13 categories or "Other"), and specific job title (open ended).  Based on this information a total of 749 respondents could be placed in one career field or the other, with 200 being coded as IT and 549 coded as non-IT.
Data collected in the first part of the survey allowed the KU research team to construct a number of instruments that have been used by previous researchers.  These include measures of: Work-family conflict, job satisfaction, life satisfaction, and work stress.   Based on responses to the Strong Interest Inventory it was possible to construct measures of the Big Five Personality Constructs, and Holland’s General Occupational Themes. Each of these instruments is described more fully in the glossary included as Appendix A in the user guide.
Because not all respondents completed the entire survey sample sizes will depend on the specific questions being analyzed.
Demographic variables include education, parent's education, family occupation, occupants in household, spouse/partner occupation, number of children in household, age, race, citizenship, and income.

			This project had several objectives: (1) to estimate the
reliabilities of diverse organizational measures by studying
organizations of various types and sizes to determine the impact of
size and type on reliability, (2) to develop techniques that facilitate
common measurement across all organizational types, (3) to determine
the characteristics of respondents most likely to provide the modal or
typical response for an organization, and (4) to demonstrate that high
quality samples of diverse organization types are technically feasible
and affordable. Measures of age, size, external setting, internal
structural differentiation, and organizational culture were obtained
from 370 government, social service, and business organizations. The
project involved data collection from at least five centrally located
decision-makers (executives, administrators, officers) of each
organization sampled. Characteristics of the respondent were included,
with major emphasis on experience with the organization as well as
current position and standardized demographic data. The unit of

			This study utilizes time-series data from 1897-2005 to explore the positive and negative effects of rivalry between labor unions. Utilizing econometric factors, it also investigates how competition from rival union federations and independent unions affects union density. Variables include counts of pro-labor and pro-management unfair labor practice cases adjudicated by the National Labor Relations Board, competitor union membership ratio and number ratio, the annual percentage change in union density, and the percentage change in the density of AFL/AFL-CIO membership. Other variables include the percentage of United States House members who belong to the Democratic Party, the percentage of popular votes in presidential elections that favored Socialist or Communist parties, core employment and unemployment, the consumer price index (CPI), and the labor union historical periods: Western Labor Union (WLU), Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), Trade Union Unity League (TUUL), Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), and Change to Win (CTW).

			This 1996 mail survey was conducted to gather comprehensive
information on performance measurement activities in state science and
technology-based (S&amp;T) programs, and on the perspectives and
motivation of program managers in regard to performance measurement
activities. Surveys were sent to the program directors of 75 programs
in 50 states. Responses were received from 44 programs, representing
38 states. The survey was designed to gather data on both existing and
planned evaluation and performance measurement activities. The survey
covered three major areas: organizational information, evaluation
activities of the organizations, and the use of evaluation
findings. Questions soliciting organizational information included
items on organization description, staff size, history, budget,
funding sources, and primary audience served by the
organization. Questions on evaluation activities addressed the type of
descriptive information sought through assessment, methods for the
collection of such data, reasons why performance is assessed, and
knowledge of state requirements for the collection of performance
data. Finally, a series of questions focused on use issues,
specifically the organizational changes that resulted from performance
measurement findings.

			This collection consists of three separate surveys
 undertaken to assess the extent of sexual harassment within the
 federal government. The records in each file contain responses to a
 mail survey on sexual harassment in the federal workplace from a
 disproportionately stratified sample. Each record contains reactions
 to a series of statements about the respondent's workplace, such as
 "I feel free to bring up general work-related concerns or suggestions
 to my immediate supervisor." Other data gathered include attitudes
 regarding sexual behavior that can happen at work, how the respondent
 defined sexual harassment, opinions on remedies that could reduce
 sexual harassment, descriptions of and actions taken in response to
 specific incidents of sexual harassment, and information about whether
 the respondent had been accused of sexually harassing others.
 Additional information includes respondent's work schedule, working
 hours, number of coworkers, number of supervisors, and gender of
 supervisors. Demographic variables include race, age, marital status,
sex, and level of education.

			The objective of this study was to collect data that could
 be used to analyze the relationship between social networks and job
 mobility. This dataset contains systematic network data on respondents
 and their contacts, information on the respondents' job search
 activities, and employment history data. These data were collected
 from United States television station managers through a mail survey,
 from October 1997 to January 1998. A systematic random sample of 609
 managers was drawn from the Television and Cable Factbook, with 283
 completed surveys returned. Respondents were asked to make comparisons
 between their current and previous positions in the areas of benefits,
 income, job prestige, station prestige, work experience, and
 coworkers. Those queried were asked to describe their professional
 business contacts both within and outside of the television industry,
 and to comment on how those relationships affected their career
 decisions. In addition, respondents were asked how much time they
 devoted to keeping informed about job openings within their field, and
 what sources provided them with such information. Specifically, they
 were asked how many opportunities they learned of through trade
 publications, newspapers, employment agencies and head hunters,
 colleagues at other television stations, their current employer, and
 other employers. Respondents were asked whether they found any jobs of
 interest to them through those sources, whether they applied for the
 positions, and whether they were offered a job. Background information
 on respondents includes age, sex, education, marital status, number of
 children in household, employment status and history, and the age and
sex of their colleagues.

			The purpose of this data collection is to provide 
 information about the process by which various organizations become 
 involved in debates about national labor policy. A policy domain is a 
 set of organizations, both governmental and in the private sector, 
 operating at the federal level and seeking to influence the decisions 
 of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government in 
 some substantive arena--in this case, the regulation of labor 
 practices. The central issue of the research is how the social 
 structure of relationships among organizations in the national labor 
 policy domain affect the processes by which policy proposals are 
 generated, placed on the national political agenda, and subsequently 
 enacted or blocked. To address this issue, the most active 
 organizations in the United States labor policy domain were identified 
 and contacted for interviews. A knowledgeable representative from each 
 organization, typically a director of governmental affairs, was asked a 
 battery of questions about his or her organization's involvement in 
 shaping national policies. The general scope of these questions was (1) 
 What particular issues in the labor field are of interest to the 
 organization? (2) In what specific policy events between 1981 and 1987 
 did the organization participate, and what was the nature of that 
 involvement? (3) What general patterns of interaction does the 
 organization have with other participants in the national labor policy 
 domain? Variables in the collection include collective bargaining 
 regulations, participation of labor in management and control of 
 enterprises, employee stock ownership plans, and internal organization 
 and governance of labor unions and employer associations. Other items 
 cover working conditions (safety and physical conditions), employment 
 conditions (hiring, promotion, firing, layoff, retirement, time, and 
 wages), social policies (pensions, insurance, maternity leave, and job 
 rights), disadvantaged populations in the labor market (women, 
 minorities, the handicapped, youth, the elderly, veterans, welfare, 
 vocational education and retraining), discrimination in employment, and 
 labor market policies (job creation, immigration, underground economy, 
and plant closings).

			This data collection examines the attitudes of Michigan
 members of Common Cause, the American Civil Liberties Union, the
 League of Women Voters, and the Conservative Caucus. The data file is
 comprised of four components, one for each public interest group --
 thus, each respondent may have up to four records one for each
 interest group. Each component contains the same 29
 variables. Respondents were queried regarding their reasons for
 joining the organizations, level of activism, level of satisfaction
 with the group, plans for membership renewal, knowledge of the group's
 issues, and extent of involvement in organizational issues. Gender,
 age, education, and occupation of the members are also included in the
data.

			The data for this study were obtained from the salaried
 personnel of 14 manufacturing firms located in two different
 industrial areas of the country. With two exceptions, the number of
 employees in these companies ranged between roughly 1,000 and 2,000,
 while the size of the management groups ranged from lows of 57-73
 to highs of 242-366. Questions were asked about the distribution
 of power among divisions of the company, the discretion allowed
 employees, the individual influence of employees, and the coordination
 of individuals and groups within the firm. The dataset is structured
 with the individual employee as the unit of analysis, but the data can
 be aggregated on the basis of functional group and/or level within
the organization, as well as by organization and by plant.

			This data collection contains survey results based on
personal interviews conducted with 1,239 workers who participated in
union representation elections in the United States in 1972-1973. The
purpose of the study was to test the validity of the assumptions made
by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) that employees are likely
to attend to and be significantly influenced by the pre-election
campaign in deciding whether or not to vote for union representation.
These assumptions were the basis of many NLRB rules and regulations
surrounding such elections. This study attempted to measure the actual
effect of the pre-election campaign, particularly unlawful
campaigning, on the employees' predisposition to vote for or against
union representation. To that end, employees were interviewed in two
waves, first to determine how employees intended to vote before the
campaign began and then to measure how they ultimately voted. In Wave
1, workers were questioned about their pre-campaign sentiments about
union representation. Employees were asked how they felt about their
working conditions and about unions in general. They also were asked
whether or not they had signed a union authorization card and how they
would vote if the election were to be held the next day. In Wave 2,
employees were asked to recall the content of the campaign and to
disclose how they had voted and why, including any observations of
pressures exerted by companies/employers or unions before and after
the representation elections. Data collected about the respondents'
demographic characteristics and job experience include age, sex, race,
education level, political preferences, marital status, tenure, hours
working (per week), wage rate (per hour), if previous union member, if
voted in previous NLRB election, and if spouse, father, or mother were

			The purpose of this study was to provide a description of
 both the current status and the changes in businesses and jobs in all
 United States counties, by 75 two-digit industry sectors. The study
 was designed to inquire to what extent new firm formation and small
 firm expansion reflect or cause economic growth. The data, originally
 assembled by Dun and Bradstreet, was edited and processed to adjust
 for errors and omissions to create a complete census of all business
 firms (single-site and multiple-site) and associated employment in six
 two-year periods: 1976-1978, 1978-1980, 1980-1982, 1982-1984,
 1984-1986, and 1986-1988. The datasets contain detailed data for the
 years 1976-1988 on establishment births (new units entering the file),
 establishment deaths (existing units disappearing), expansion and
 contraction of all private-sector business establishments, and on the
 number of business jobs affected by these changes. Each record
 consists of a number of variables that (1) identify the county and
 industry, (2) describe the firms and jobs at the beginning of the
 two-year period, (3) provide descriptions at the end of the two-year
 period, and (4) that provide data on sources of changes during the
 two-year period. As the data are designed to be a complete census of
 all business units and all jobs, it can be aggregated to provide
 complete counts for any industry, region, or state or for the entire
country.

This study analyzes weekly data at United States and Canadian automobile assembly plants in order to understand the short-run dynamics of manufacturing production, particularly with regard to business cycles. Although the automobile industry accounts for a small fraction of aggregate employment, it continues to account for a noticeable fraction of business cycle volatility. Hence, studies of this industry are very useful for understanding business cycles.


The data consist of information on weekly operations at United States and Canadian automobile assembly plants owned by the Detroit Three automakers (Chrysler, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors). The dataset was constructed from industry trade publications that report production schedules at these assembly plants on a weekly basis over the two time periods: 1972-1983, and 1990-2001. The period 1984 to 1989 was excluded only because the authors did not have access to key publications at the time the data were collected.  Certain heavy-truck and specialty vehicle facilities were excluded, such as the AMC General military vehicle plant, and GMAD Truck and Coach in Pontiac, MI, which primarily produces buses.


The dataset was collected mainly by reading the weekly production articles in Automotive News, which list the names of assembly plants that are closed each week because of union holidays, inventory adjustments, supply disruptions, and model changeovers.  The articles also report which plants are working overtime hours each week. Observations on the line speed posted on each assembly line and the number of shifts working at each plant were collected from Wards Automotive Yearbook and Automotive News.


Unfortunately, the data do not include information on actual production and sales. Production and sales data are reported by model. It is very difficult to match up production and sales data to more than a few plants because most plants produce several models and most models are produced at several plants. Moreover, sales are not reported weekly.

			This Workplace Ethnography project generated content-coded
data from the full population of book-length English language
organizational ethnographies. Drawn from Australia, Canada, China,
Colombia, France, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Israel, Japan,
Norway, the Philippines, Scotland, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan,
United States, and Zambia, these ethnographies provided deep
descriptions on a wide range of topics, such as worker behavior,
management behavior, coworker relations, labor process, conflict and
resistance, citizenship behavior, emotional labor, and sexual
harassment. Coding of these characteristics yielded variables based on
descriptions of worklife in specific organizational settings. The
study data was collected in mainly two periods: the early 1990s and
the early 2000s. The study generated 204 ethnographic cases. These
cases were derived from 156 separate books since the observations
reported in some books allowed the coding of multiple cases. The
general scope of questions included organizational factors such as
occupation, workplace organization, pay scheme, employment size, the
situation of the company, the nature of company ownership, staff
turnover, layoff frequency, how well the organization operated in terms
of communications, recruitment and retention of personnel, and
maintenance of equipment, as well as substantive facts concerning labor
market opportunity, and labor force composition. On the topic of
management, questions addressed leadership, organization of production,
sexual harassment, and control strategies. Community factors were
assessed through questions regarding unemployment and if the area was
rural or urban. A series of questions addressed job satisfaction, pay,
benefit package, job security, effort bargain, conflict with
management/supervisors, training, worker strategies, conditions of
consent/compliance, and nature of consent/compliance. The nature of
work was queried through questions regarding autonomy, creativity,
meaningful work, freedom of movement, comfort of work, injuries,
employment status, and frequency of conflict with customers. Additional
questions included size and nature of the focal group, group dynamics,
conflict between the focal group and management, basis of alternative
social groups at work, and if work friendships carried over to the
outside. Questions about methodology covered ethnographer's theoretical
orientation, focus of ethnography, ethnographer's gender, data
collection method, supplemental data used, main type of supplemental
data used, and position of key informant. Additional items gathered
basic information about book title, author's last name, modal
occupation, industry, country/region, and observer's role.
