Enclave Data
Some datasets contain highly sensitive personal information about respondents that is also potentially valuable for research. Access to these datasets is severely restricted. They may be examined by approved investigators only on-site at ICPSR's secure data enclave in Ann Arbor. Analysis of these data is closely monitored to protect confidentiality.
Using the Data Enclave
Investigators cannot bring laptops or other electronic devices into the data enclave. They work on a computer equipped with Windows XP, Microsoft Office Suite and SPSS, SAS and Stata statistical packages. They have a unique password-protected profile that allows access to the restricted data files. These computers do not have e-mail or Internet access. Removable media access ports have been disabled.
A monitor is present at all times when a researcher is using the enclave. The monitor inspects and approves all materials brought into the enclave, and oversees the use of the enclave printer. Investigators use a workstation outside the enclave for e-mail and telephone access. Lockers are provided outside the enclave for secure storage of personal belongings.
Review of Output
All papers, notes, and other materials are reviewed for disclosure risk before they leave the enclave. An ICPSR unit manager will conduct a disclosure review of all output created by analysis of enclave data. Approved analysis output will be sent to the researcher on media supplied by ICPSR.
Depositing Enclave Data
Principal investigators interested in depositing data for use only in the data enclave should contact Amy Pienta, ICPSR Director of Acquisitions, apienta@umich.edu.
