Newly Licensed Registered Nurse Survey, 2007 (ICPSR 36812)

Principal Investigator(s): Kovner, Christine, Rory Meyers College of Nursing; Brewer, Carol, University of Buffalo School of Nursing

Summary:

This is the second wave of a multi wave panel survey that studied newly licensed registered nurses who obtained their first license to practice between September 1, 2004 and August 31, 2005. It was conducted as part of the RN Work Project, a national study of new nurses funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The survey interviewed the nurses about their jobs, turnover, intentions and attitudes--including intent, satisfaction, organizational commitment, and preferences about work.

Access Notes

  • One or more files in this data collection have special restrictions ; consult the restrictions note to learn more. You can apply online for access to the restricted-use data. A login is required to apply.

As explained in the ICPSR Processing Notes in the codebook, ICPSR restricted two variables from general dissemination for reasons of confidentiality. Users interested in obtaining the restricted data must complete a restricted data use agreement with ICPSR, specify the reasons for the request, and obtain IRB approval or notice of exemption for their research. Apply for access to the restricted data via the ICPSR restricted data contract portal which can be accessed on the study home page.

Any public-use data files in this collection are available for access by the general public. Access does not require affiliation with an ICPSR member institution.

  • These data have been updated since their release as https://doi.org/ICPSR36812.v1, which you used to locate the data. If you need access to a previous version of the data (e.g., to replicate results in an article or report), you can contact ICPSR User Support to find out if a prior version is available.

Scope of Study

Subject Terms:    health care delivery, medical education, nurses

Geographic Coverage:    United States

Time Period:

  • 2007

Date of Collection:

  • 2007

Unit of Observation:    Individual

Universe:    Nurses who responded to the first wave of the survey: Newly Licensed Registered Nurses, 2006 (ICPSR 36773). The first wave interviewed nurses who obtained their first license to practice between September 1, 2004 and August 31, 2005.

Data Type(s):    survey data

Data Collection Notes:

Additional information about the survey is available on the RN Work Project website.

The record layout file and SPSS setup apply to both the public- and restricted-use plain text versions of the data file.

The data files, setup and record layout file are encoded with the UTF-8 character encoding standard.

The data file can be merged with the other waves of the Newly Licensed Registered Nurse Survey (e.g., ICPSR 36773) by matching on the common ID variables idnumber or ICPSR_RANDOM_ID.

Methodology

Sample:

The wave 2 survey attempted to interview all of the nurses who responded in wave 1. The wave 1 respondents were selected using a random stratified cluster design which mirrored the sampling design of the Community Tracking Study (ICPSR 2524, 2597, 3199, 3267, 3764, 3820, 4216 and 4584). The baseline sample was nested in the 60 CTS sites (51 Metropolitan Statistical Areas and nine groups of non-MSA counties in 35 states across the contiguous United States) and was designed to select nurses with equal probabilities of selection across the sites.

Mode of Data Collection:    mail questionnaire

Response Rates:    71 percent of the nurses who responded in wave 1 also responded in wave 2.

Extent of Processing:   ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
