Principal Investigator(s): United States Department of Health and Human Services. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. National Center for Health Statistics
Summary: The purpose of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is to obtain information about the amount and distribution of illness, its effects in terms of disability and chronic impairments, and the types of health services people receive. The 1974 Medical Care Supplement File provides variables from the core Person File (see HEALTH INTERVIEW SURVEY, 1974 [ICPSR 8339]) including sex, age, race, marital status, veteran status, education, income, industry and occupation codes, and limits on activit... Scope of Study
Summary: The purpose of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is to obtain information about the amount and distribution of illness, its effects in terms of disability and chronic impairments, and the types of health services people receive. The 1974 Medical Care Supplement File provides variables from the core Person File (see HEALTH INTERVIEW SURVEY, 1974 [ICPSR 8339]) including sex, age, race, marital status, veteran status, education, income, industry and occupation codes, and limits on activity. The variables unique to this Medical Care Supplement (Part 1) include items on type of doctor visits (private vs. group practice), place of care, number of doctor visits in the last 12 months, type of doctor usually seen, payment source for doctor bills, problems getting care in the past year, and type of medical services received in the last twelve months.
Subject Terms: chronic disabilities, chronic illnesses, disabilities, doctor visits, health, health care, health care costs, health care facilities, health care services, health policy, health problems, illness, insurance coverage, medical care
Geographic Coverage: United States
Time Period:
- 1974
Date of Collection:
- 1974
Universe: Civilian noninstitutionalized population of the United States.
Data Types: clinical data, survey data
Data Collection Notes:
These data files contain weights, which must be used in any analysis.
Per agreement with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), ICPSR distributes the data file(s) and technical documentation in this collection in their original form as prepared by NCHS.
Methodology
Sample: A multistage probability sample was used in selecting housing units.
Weight: These data contain multiple weight variables for each part. Users should refer to the User Guide for further information regarding the weights and their derivation. Additionally, users may need to weight the data prior to analysis.
Mode of Data Collection: self-enumerated questionnaire
Data Source:
self-enumerated questionnaires
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created online analysis version with question text.
Version(s)
Original ICPSR Release: 1992-10-31
Version History:
- 2010-11-29 Procedure documentation pertaining to study design has been added.
- 2010-10-19 SAS, SPSS, and Stata setup files have been added. Some corresponding documentation has been updated and pre-existing data files have been replaced. The National Health Survey Procedure Documentation has been removed from the dataset list, and can now be found with all other corresponding and added documentation.
