Romantic Pairs
The Romantic Pairs data are one of the most sensitive of the Add Health restricted data and therefore require very specific data and computer security and a separate contract.

Only one person can be on the Romantic Pair data contract. The applicant must also specific the other Add Health data they require to conduct the research with the Romantic Pair data. In addition, the CD on which the Romantic Pair data are sent must be returned within one month of the research loading the data to the specified computer identified in the Romantic Pair data contract.

If you receive any of the Romantic Pairs data, you cannot receive the HIV data.

HIV
The HIV data are one of the most sensitive of the Add Health restricted data and therefore require very specific data and computer security and a separate contract.

Only one person can be on the HIV data contract. The applicant must also specify the other Add Health data they require to conduct the research with the HIV data. In addition, the CD on which the HIV data are sent must be returned within one month of the research loading the data to the specified computer identified in the HIV data contract.

If you receive the HIV data, you cannot receive any of the Romantic Pairs data.

ONE data
The Obesity and Neighborhood Environment (ONE) database provides physical, social, and economic neighborhood environment measures corresponding with Add Health respondent locations in Waves I and III. Community-level data include density and proximity to recreational facilities, land use patterning, population, economic, climate, and crime statistics, which are linked spatially and temporally to individual-level Add Health behavior and health outcome data.

DNA Data

Wave III DNA
This form must accompany your request for the Wave III DNA data. When writing the DNA abstract, you must incorporate the variables requested in DNA Attachment B within the text of your DNA abstract.

Wave IV DNA

Special Justification
When submitting a contract requesting additional data beyond what is included in the Core Data package (Study #27021), you must submit a brief paragraph with a justification as to why the additional data are needed for your proposed research.

To renew a contract the PI should send the following:

Adding Staff
To add staff, the contract PI must submit a staff list adding the new staff and have the new staff member sign a Pledge of Confidentiality. Forms may be emailed to rhataway@umich.edu or faxed to the attention of Russel Hathaway at 734.647.8700.

Transferring Contracts
DSDR has established procedures such that the contract PI can transfer the contract to another investigator.

Existing Contract Termination
To terminate an existing contract, the following is needed from the contract PI:

A letter stating that all Add Health files have been securely removed from the computer and that the server/external hard drive/hard drive of the computer has been erased with the secure erasure program named in the approved data security plan.
The original data CD(s), sent to ICPSR by UPS or Fed Ex to:

Final annual report or a statement regarding publications, presentations, dissertations, or grants since the last annual report.

Fee Structure

New Contract Fee
For new contracts, the fee is $800 for individuals at ICPSR member institutions, $850 for individual at non-member institutions. A list of ICPSR member institutions is available. All new contracts include Wave IV data.

Wave IV Fee
For current Add Health contract holders, there is a $100 fee for Wave IV data.

Additional Data
With the exception of the Wave IV data fee, there are no fees for requesting additional Add Health data. For example, if you have the Core data file and determine that you would like the Friend Files Data at a later date, there is no fee.

Renewals and Addition of New Staff
There are no fees to renew your Add Health contract nor are there any fees to add staff to your existing contracts.

Additional Copies
There is a $300 fee for a second contract, which provides you with another complete copy of the restricted-use data.

Data Structure

Add Health restricted data are organized by 15 study numbers at ICPSR under the series title National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), 1994-2002, Restricted Data Series. Codebooks and variables lists are available online for all but four (4) of the restricted data groupings. Codebooks and variable lists are not available for the Wave 1 and Wave II Romantic Pair Data (Study #27027), the Wave III Partner Data (Study #27028), the Wave III Supplemental Partner File Data (Study #27029), nor the HIV Data (Study # 27032).
