Scope of Study | |
| Summary: | This data collection is comprised of responses from two sets of survey questionnaires, the basic Current Population Survey (CPS) and a survey on the topic of School Enrollment in the United States, which was administered as a supplement to the October CPS. The CPS, administered monthly, is a labor force survey providing current estimates of the economic status and activities of the population of the United States, for the week prior to the survey. Specifically, the CPS provides estimates of total employment (both farm and nonfarm), nonfarm self- employed persons, domestics, and unpaid helpers in nonfarm family enterprises, wage and salaried employees, and estimates of total unemployment. The October supplemental survey queried respondents on school enrollment for all persons in the household aged three and over. Information was collected on current grade at public or private school, whether attending college full- or part-time at a two-or four-year institution, year last attended a regular school, year graduated from high school, grade retention, library use, library accessibility, and resources for people with disabilities. Demographic variables include age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, veteran status, educational attainment, occupation, and income. |

| Geographic Coverage: | United States |
| Time Period: | October 2006 |
| Date(s) of Collection: | October 15, 2006 - October 21, 2006 |
| Unit of Observation: | individuals within housing units |
| Universe: | The CPS universe is made up of all persons in the civilian noninstitutionalized population of the United States living in households. The October 2006 supplement universe includes the full CPS sample comprised of all people 3 years old or over. |
| Data Type: | Survey data |
| Data Collection Notes: | (1) These data are distributed exactly as they arrived from the data depositor. ICPSR has not checked or processed the data. Consistency checks and standardization of missing values were performed by the principal investigators. Users should contact the principal investigators if further information is desired. (2) The file is sorted by state rank by core-based statistical area (CBSA) rank by household identification number by line number. (3) The October school supplement data for adults are in locations (951-976). Children's data are in locations (977-988). Recodes are in locations (989-994). Allocation flags for school enrollment supplement variables are in locations (995-1030). The supplement weight appears in 1031-1040. (4) Users are strongly encouraged to read the User Guide, which contains the questionnaire for the supplement and additional technical documentation. |
Methodology | |
| Sample: | A multistage probability sample was selected to represent the universe of approximately 55,000 households. |
| Weight: | Supplemental weighting was added to this year's iteration of the School Enrollment data. The basic CPS weight (PWSUPWGT) in location 1031-1040 should be used for tallying individuals on the file. Users are strongly encouraged to refer to the User Guide for more detailed information regarding the weights used. |
| Mode of Data Collection: | Computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) |
| Computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI) | |
