Scope of Study | |
| Summary: | This data collection focuses on the situation caused by Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Respondents were asked if they approved of George Bush's handling of the situation and the sending of American troops to the Persian Gulf, if the United States should use military force if necessary to ensure Iraq withdraws from Kuwait, if the economic boycott of Iraq would make Iraq withdraw, if they approved of the United Nations Security Council authorization of the use of force should Iraq not withdraw by January 15th, whether the United Nations resolution would convince Iraq to withdraw, and whether Congress should endorse the resolution. Additional topics covered include the likelihood that the United States would get involved in a war with Iraq (and, if so, the length of that war), the resumption of the military draft in the United States, the likelihood of a diplomatic solution as a result of talks between Secretary of State Baker and the Iraqi foreign minister to Washington, issues surrounding the interaction between Bush and Congress regarding the situation and possible war, and the reason behind American troops' being sent to the Middle East (moral principle or economic reality). Background information provided includes political alignment, education, age, race, sex, and state/region of residence. |
