Scope of Study

Summary:This data collection contains information regarding the nomination of John Tower as secretary of defense and other political issues. Respondents were asked if they approved of the choices Bush made for his Cabinet, specifically John Tower, whether the president should be allowed to choose his cabinet without Senate approval, if Tower was treated fairly by the Senate, and if a delay in naming a secretary of defense would threaten the country's national security. Additionally, respondents were queried about John Tower's drinking habits, his fitness to be secretary of defense, and whether the Senate's rejection of Tower's nomination would be a defeat for President Bush. Background information on respondents includes political alignment and sex.
