Scope of Study

Summary:This data collection supplies standard monthly labor force data as well as supplemental data on work experience, income, noncash benefits, and migration. Comprehensive information is given on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 15 years old and older. Additional data are available concerning weeks worked and hours per week worked, reason not working full-time, total income and income components, and residence on March 1, 1994. This file also contains data covering nine noncash income sources: food stamps, school lunch programs, employer-provided group health insurance plans, employer-provided pension plans, personal health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, CHAMPUS or military health care, and energy assistance. Information on demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, race, household relationship, and Hispanic origin, is available for each person in the household enumerated.

Subject Term(s):census data, demographic characteristics, employment, Hispanic origins, households, income, job history, labor force, Medicaid, Medicare, occupational mobility, population characteristics, population estimates, unemployment, working hours

Geographic Coverage:United States

Date(s) of Collection:March 1995

Universe:Civilian noninstitutional population of the United States living in housing units and members of the armed forces living in civilian housing units on military bases or in households not on military bases.

Data Type:survey data

Data Collection Notes:(1) The 285,550 cases in the hierarchical file include household-level, family-level, and person-level records. There are approximately 111 variables for household records, approximately 74 variables for family records, and approximately 343 variables for the person records. (2) Data on employment and income refer to the preceding year, although demographic data refer to the time of the survey. (3) The technical documentation incorrectly lists the residence information as pertaining to March 1, 1990 -- the correct year is 1994. (4) A major redesign of the Current Population Survey was implemented in January 1994. The primary aim of the redesign was to improve the quality of the data derived from the survey by introducing a new questionnaire and modernized data collection methods. (5) The codebook is provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet.

Methodology

Sample:A national probability sample was used in selecting housing units. About 54,500 housing units were contacted, with an additional 2,500 Hispanic households added to the March survey sample. The sample was located in 792 sample areas comprising 2,007 counties and independent cities, with coverage in every state and in the District of Columbia.

Data Source:personal interviews
