| Summary: | This data collection supplies standard monthly labor force
data as well as supplemental data on work experience, income, noncash
benefits, and migration. Comprehensive information is given on the
employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 15 years old
and older. Additional data are available concerning weeks worked and
hours per week worked, reason not working full-time, total income and
income components, and residence on March 1, 2000. This file also
contains data covering noncash income sources such as food stamps,
school lunch programs, employer-provided group health insurance plans,
employer-provided pension plans, personal health insurance, Medicaid,
Medicare, CHAMPUS or military health care, and energy assistance.
Information on demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, race,
household relationships, and Hispanic origin, is available for each
person in the household enumerated. |

civilian housing units on a military base or in households not on a
military base. |

| Data Collection Notes: | (1) In this hierarchical dataset, there are three
record types. The first record type is Household, with 124 variables
for 64,944 records. The Family record type has 76 variables for 58,093
records, and Person records have 430 variables for 133,710
records. There are a total of 256,747 records in the file. (2) Jean
Roth from the National Bureau of Economic Research submitted SAS and
SPSS data definition statements for this collection. These files
produce a merged dataset with all records concatenated and, in the
case of SAS, will produce additional datasets with specific record
types included. (3) The codebook is provided by the principal
investigator as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file
format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed
using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat
Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is
provided on the ICPSR Web site. |

| Sample: | A national probability sample was used in selecting
housing units. About 60,000 housing units were contacted, with an
additional 3,500 Hispanic households added to the March survey
sample. The sample was located in 792 sample areas comprising 2,007
counties and independent cities with coverage in every state and the
District of Columbia. |

| Note: | A list of the data formats available for this study can be found in the
summary of holdings. Detailed file-level information (such as record length, case count, and variable count) is listed in the
file manifest. |

|
| 2001-11-02 - The codebook for this collection has been updated
and replaced, per User Note 1. Three items in the Household record
(H-FAMINC, H-RESPNM, H-TYPEBC) and six items in the Person record
(A-HRS1, A-WKSLK, PRPTREA, PEABSRSN, PEHRUSLT, PXNATVTY) were
corrected to match the existing data. Recent improvements in data
processing have made it possible for a -1 to be included in the list
of possible values for certain items. Where previously the value for
"not in universe" was assigned 0 (zero), this is no longer universally
true. For the nine items mentioned above, the value of "not in
universe" is assigned to -1, not 0 (zero). The documentation now
correctly represents these nine items. Also, SAS and SPSS data
definition statements produced by the National Bureau of Economics
Research have been added to the collection. |
|---|
| |
|
| 2001-02-07 - SAS and SPSS data definition
statements have been added to this data collection. |
