File Size: One file for each State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and eight outlying areas. Total record count for all areas is 210,394 logical records; record size is 96 characters. Each file is identified by the FIPS State code and its label. File Naming Conventions: File names are CENSUS_GRF_ss, where ss is the FIPS State code. File Sort Sequence: Each file is sorted by record type. Record types 03 and 06 are sorted by code within county, while record type 04 is sorted by code within county and county subdivision (MCD/CCD). A two-digit field used to identify the kind-of-geographic- entity record. The record types are: 01 Tabulation State 02 Tabulation County 03 County Subdivision (Minor Civil Division/Census County Division) 04 Sub-Minor Civil Division 05 Place 06 Voting District 07 American Indian Area 08 Alaska Native Regional Corporation 09 Alaska Native Village Statistical Area FIPS State Code. A two-digit code assigned alphabetically by State name (including the District of Columbia), followed by Puerto Rico and the outlying areas, as issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Gaps occur in the numbering sequence to allow for the possible insertion of names of future States and statistically equivalent areas. FIPS County Code. A three-digit code assigned to each county and statistically equivalent area, alphabetically within State and statistically equivalent area, followed by independent cities, assigned alphabetically within State, as issued by the NIST. The combination of appropriate State and county codes identify a specific county uniquely. FIPS 55 Code. A five-digit "place" code assigned alphabetically within State to all county subdivisions, places, and American Indian/Alaska Native areas, as issued by the NIST. The combination of appropriate FIPS State and FIPS 55 codes identify an area uniquely. Name. The alphanumeric name of the geographic entity. This 60-character field contains the name followed by the publication version of its political or statistical area description. This description, which identifies the legal status or the type of statistical area of the entity, does not appear when that description is part of the official name or the entity legally does not have a status. All names are left-justified in upper and lower case, except voting district (VTD) names, which are all upper case. An asterisk in the VTD name field signifies a voting district or similar entity whose boundaries were not adjusted for statistical purposes. 1 Page 8 ICPSR 9731 Census County Subdivision Code. A three-digit code assigned by the Census Bureau to each county subdivision in alphanumeric sequence within each county. The combination of appropriate State/county/county subdivision codes identify a county subdivision uniquely. Census Sub-MCD Code. A two-digit code assigned by the Census Bureau to each minor civil division (MCD) subdivision in alphanumeric sequence within each MCD. The combination of appropriate State/county/MCD/sub-MCD codes identify a sub-MCD uniquely. (Sub-MCD's occur only in Puerto Rico and the Federated States of Micronesia.) 4-1 Census Place Code. A four-digit code assigned by the Census Bureau to each place in alphabetical sequence within each State. The combination of appropriate State and place codes identify a specific place uniquely. Census Voting District Code. A four-character code assigned to each voting district (VTD) or statistically equivalent area in alphanumeric sequence within each county. A VTD code of ZZZZ signifies "VTD's not defined." Census American American Indian Code. A four-digit code assigned to each American Indian area by the Census Bureau in nationwide alphabetical order within the categories listed below. The codes are broken into ranges as follows: 0001-4789 American Indian reservations (AIR's); reservation or tribe associated with trust land(s) 4801-4989 Joint American Indian reservation lands 5001-5689 Tribal jurisdiction statistical areas (TJSA's) 5701-5989 Joint TJSA's 9001-9589 Tribal designated statistical areas (TDSA's) Census ANRC Code. A two-digit code assigned by the Census Bureau to each Alaska Native Regional Corporation in alphabetical order. Census ANVSA Code. A four-digit code assigned by the Census Bureau to each Alaska Native village statistical area in alphabetical order.
