SSD will forward one copy to the primary researcher. 1 OVERVIEW ORVESTO: A Multifaceted Working Tool by Ingemar Lindberg In the middle of the 1960's, Testologen Ltd. introduced a survey method which, at that time, was entirely new. It was carried out within the framework of the then "Market Sociologist," in cooperation with a large group of advertisers. This method entailed collecting "target-group data" (socio-economic data, hobbies, shopping habits, holdings, shopping intentions, etc.) as well as data about reading habits; thus, the so called 'single-source survey'. This meant that, for the first time, researchers could analyze these data by matching them against each other. Previously, the data were collected as separate pieces of information in different surveys, which made media analysis difficult and inefficient. This new way of conducting surveys required collecting a vast amount of data from the same single-source survey. This triggered a review of the methods involved in conducting surveys, i.e an examination of the types of questions used and the form of contact with respondents. Jarko Cerha conducted a method experiment in 1965, covering a large respondent sample. In this experiment, the effect of contact type in combination with graph type was examined. This resulted in selection of a reading frequency scale with 16 "degrees" combined with a postal contact type. (See Cerha, J., 1967: SELECTIVE MASS COMMUNICATION, pp.119-124, 134-172.) The survey attempt was soon met with great interest from both advertisers and publishers. After a trial period, the first ORVESTO report was published in 1969. The name itself was a way to emphasize the goal to cover many media groups: OR as in organizational, VE as in weekly and STO as in city press (storstads = big city). Since 1969, 19 reports have been published, and since 1972 they have been released bi-annually. Approximately, 10,000 copies of each report are printed and distributed free of charge to most advertisers in Sweden, and to some extent 1 abroad. Since the beginning of the project, 132,529 respondents have participated in the surveys. After adjustments, the original ORVESTO survey series today comprises as many as 418 variables. In addition, individually purchased target-group questions are reported on an individual basis to each client. 1 GENERAL CONDITIONS: SELECTION, DROP-OFFS This survey is one in a series of surveys in the continuing consumer omnibus of Testologen, Sweden Now, where data was collected through letter inquiry. Testologen Ltd. provides information concerning selection, drop-offs, etc. only with regard to bi-annual reports of omnibuses. Precise information is lacking for any single survey in the series. Generally one can use the fact statements for the report as a whole, even for single surveys. During the first six months of 1972, three surveys of Sweden Now were collected. The total number sampled was 8,640 in the age group 15-67 years of age. The sample was created from population records. The selection was made by SCB (The Central Bureau for Statistics) from RTBS (population statistics). The P-811 data are the first wave of the 1972 surveys. Of the total 8,640 sample, 309 were defined as "not current target-group." Those in the "not current target-group" include: 10 deceased, 12 emigrants, 21 staying abroad, 12 in the army, 49 travelling abroad, 15 who did not speak Swedish, 56 unknown but registered, 34 hospitalized, and 99 sick in the home. The net selection for the three surveys conducted during the spring of 1972 totals 8,331 respondents. Of the 8,331 respondents, 2,226 (27%) did not answer the surveys. Unanswered question forms resulted from: "no interest in the survey" (22%), "lack of time" (13%), "no contact despite at least five tries" or "not available" (38%), "want to be paid" (1%), and "promised but still did not answer" (24%). Investigators carried out directed actions in approximately one-ninth of the above mentioned unanswered cases in order to increase the number of responses. In accordance with a specific selection procedure, every third person who had not answered by a certain time was offered some kind of encouragement for sending in the questionnaires. Those who were selected through this procedure represent two respondents in the drop-off figures. Through weighting a considerably larger number of responses was expected (see variable for drop-off weighting). In regard to the first six months of 1972, the number of responses expected was 6,875 instead of the 6,105 actually submitted. The estimate of the weighted number of responses is 83% of the net selection. The existing survey, Sweden Now P-811, comprises 2,008 respondents or 32.9% of the total number of submitted and accepted responses during the six-month period (unweighted numbers). The drop-off of different categories concerning this survey is assumed to be equivalent to the proportion 1 accounted for above. The field work was carried out from February 27-April 7, 1972. Within Testologen Ltd, economist (B.A.) Ulf Hartman was responsible for the administration of the survey; Mrs Ebba Sommar was responsible for the field work; and economist (B.A.) Ingemar Lindberg was responsible for the ORVESTO-report from which the following data was derived. (ORVESTO 1979-II, published by Testologen Ltd.) The Swedish Social Science Data Service received funds for budget year 1983/84 from the Riksbanken's Anniversary Celebration Fund for adjustments and documentation of the ORVESTO-data. The work was done with the help of a computer-based documentation system; placed at the disposal of the SSD by the Inter-university Consortium for Political Research (ICPSR) at The University of Michigan. The system utilized is the Guided Interactive Dataset Organization (GIDO). This study is released to the research community in the same form as received by ICPSR with the exceptions of the English translations of the introduction and the variable descrip- tion list. Data for some variables have been suppressed due to problems of confidentiality. For those variables, the data have been changed to zeroes. Researchers will find special characters (i.e., }, \, !, etc.) in the Swedish portion of the codebook which follows. It is possible that these characters may not be part of your printer's character set and may display as a blank or as other miscellaneous characters.
