It contains individual-level demographic information such as amount of property, occupation, location of residence, and income at ten year intervals. It also contains a derived measure of intergeneration prestige mobility. This second edition includes data for an additional 365 residents which are not part of the first edition. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley noted the absence of these records from the first edition, requested them from the principal investigator, and forwarded them to ICPSR. ICPSR performed several data processing tasks on this dataset. Missing data codes were standardized across variables and, with the exception of those explained below, missing data and blanks were recoded as nine (9). Variable 7 combined a substantive category with missing data. Blanks and six unidentified cases coded zero (0) were recoded as the original missing data code of three of this variable. For variable 11, several cases which were coded zero, four, and five (undefined codes), were recoded as missing data (9). Variable 13 combined a substantive category with missing data. Thus, blanks and four unidentified cases which were coded zero (0) were recoded as the original missing data code of four (4). Variable 50 contained several wild codes (i.e., 30, 51) which were recoded as missing data (99). CLASS II UNIVERSE: Population of Boston, Massachusetts SAMPLING: The study consists of a sample base of data drawn from the 1880 United States census and a longitudinal extension through 1930, by decade, of selected variables. The extension was drawn from the Boston City Directory, marriage records in 1910, and birth records in 1930. A detailed discussion of sampling procedures and derivation of the mobility scales is presented in Appendices A and B of S.
