Barley, and Hugh D. Graham SOUTHERN PRIMARY AND GENERAL ELECTION DATA, 1944-1972 (ICPSR 0072) SUMMARY: This data collection contains county-level returns for selected primary and general elections contested in 11 southern states (Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Tennessee) from 1944-1972. The returns were originally collected from a variety of official sources. Contained in the dataset are raw vote totals for candidates in elections to the offices of president, governor and United States senator, as well as for selected referenda in this period. In addition, variables describing the demographic and geographic nature of each county are presented. Appalachian mountain counties are a somewhat modified version of the counties identified in Thomas Ford's The Southern Appalachian Region. 5 Tennessee Valley (in Alabama only). 6 South Florida: which we judged to be a somewhat unique area. This category included Florida counties lying south of the northern boundaries of Volusia, Lake, Sumpter, and Citrus Counties. 7 Catholic Louisiana: 29 South Louisiana parishes with an inherited French Catholic culture. 8 West Texas: the big mass of tumbleweeds lying west of East Texas. 9 Mexican-American South Texas: the heavily Mexican counties generally conforming to 40% Spanish surnames in the 1950 Census. 3 Demographic Nature of the County 1 Metropolitan: counties containing a city of 50,000 or more population in the 1960 Census. Note: Since there was only one metropolitan county in the South containing as much as 40% black population in 1960 (Hinds County, Mississippi) the Principal Investigators used some discretion here. A few metropolitan counties such as Bibb, Richmond, and Muscogee Counties in Georgia were classified as 1 Page 2 Part 1: Virginia ICPSR 0072 blackbelt metropolitan counties even though they did not contain a black population of 40% or more in 1960. The Principal Investigators made this deviation because of the simple fact that the counties were located in the middle of the blackbelt. 2 Urban: counties containing a city of 20,000 or more according to the 1960 Census. 3 Rural-Small Town: counties containing no city of 20,000 or more. 4 County Code 001 Accomack 043 Hanover 002 Albemarle 044 Henrico 003 Alleghany 045 Henry 004 Amelia 046
