The bulk of the data in this data set were originally collected as the result of the 1970 Censuses of Population and Housing, and include information such as education, occupation and income, which were obtained from sample responses of individuals enumerated in 1970. These data were obtained in machine- readable form from the U.S. Bureau of the Census. 1 Page 2 ICPSR 0061 STANDARD STATE CODES These are the standard FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) and ICPR state codes that are found in the data set. It consists of one tape containing a series of 2374-character records: one for every State, county, SMSA, urbanized area, and place of 25,000 inhabitants or more. Each record contains all the data for one area. The areas are sorted in "tables" as they are in the Data Book. Within any one table the record contents are identical. As they appear on tape the sequence is: United States ------------- One summary record reproduced from table 1. Table 2. Counties -------- Each State total followed by each county or county equivalent (including independent cities) alphabetically by State and by county within State. Table 3. Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas --------------------------------------- Total for all SMSA's, then each SMSA, alphabetically within U.S. Table 4. Urbanized Areas --------------- Total for all urbanized areas, then each UA alphabetically within U.S. Table 5. Unincorporated Places with 25,000 Inhabitants or More ----------------------------------------------------- Each unincorporated place, alphabetically by State and by place within State. Table 6. Cities with 25,000 Inhabitants or More -------------------------------------- Each State total followed by each city, alphabetically by State and by place within State. 1 Page 6 ICPSR 0061 Table 1 (Census Regions, Divisions, and States) and table 1A (Standard Federal Administrative Regions and States) do not appear on the tape, with the exception of the U.S. Total record at the beginning of the file, reproduced from table 1. Data in the appendices of the Data Book also were entered manually and therefore are also not included on the tape. Appendix B gives corrected population counts for States, counties and places of 2,500 or more. Appendix C gives base figures for percentages for which the base does not appear in the main tables. Each record contains the full alphabetic name of the area as well as the standard geostatistical codes which apply. The nine identification variables are described on page 3. Each of the 255 data variables are recorded in nine- character integer data fields, presented in the same order within table as in the book, but not subdivided into page-like units. Data from all five tables have been organized into a single record format, with any one item having the same location throughout. In the book, layouts vary from table to table, largely because certain data are available for some types of areas but not for others, and to meet constraints of page organization. Data Book column numbers corresponding to each item are indicated in 3 right hand columns in the item description. Where an item appears in some tables but not in the others, the omission is indicated after the item descriptions beginning on page 4. The first column gives item reference for tables 2 and 3, the second for tables 4 and 5, and the third for table 6. Where a dash appears instead of an item reference the item has been omitted from the table corresponding to the column in which the dash is found. Concept Definitions. The Data Book contains important descriptive test and source notes for all items, on pages xxxi to lvi, keyed to the item reference numbers, the source notes cite specific publications generally containing additional statistical detail and more comprehensive definitions of concepts than are presented in the book. Missing Data Codes When an actual data value could not be presented for a variable, a missing data code was inserted. The codes employed are: Code Description ---- ----------- -00999991 No data - not available for this area -00999992 No data -suppressed for confidentiality purposes -00999993 No data - not applicable -00999995 No data - explained in footnote in printed CCDB -00999996 No data - not included in this table -00999997 No data - data omitted for Negro or Spanish heritage populations less than 400 1 ICPSR 0061 Page 7 GEOGRAPHIC IDENTIFICATION VARIABLES Variable Number Description -------- ----------- 1 Table number (2 to 6, or 1 for U.S. summary record*) 2 State code, FIPS** - Tables 2, 5 and 6 Blank for tables 3 and 4 3 County code, FIPS - Tables 2, 5 and 6 Blank for State total records Blank for tables 3 and 4 4 County code modified for record sorting - Tables 2, 5 and 6 Identical to FIPS county code with 3 exceptions: State 24, county 510 (Baltimore City, Md.) becomes 006 State 29, county 510 (St. Louis City, Mo.) becomes 190 State 32, county 510 (Carson City, Nev.) becomes 000 Blank for tables 3 and 4 5 SMSA code, FIPS - Table 3 only Three exceptional codes: 0002 Total for all SMSA's 9991 New York - Northern New Jersey Standard Consolidated Area (SCA) 9995 Chicago, Illinois - Northern Indiana SCA Urbanized Area code; Census - Table 4 only One exceptional code: 0003 Total for all urbanized areas Blank for tables 2, 5 and 6 6 Place code, Census - Tables 5 and 6 Blank for State total records in table 6 Blank for tables 2, 3 and 4 7 State Economic Area code - Tables 2, 5 and 6 Consists of two digits, or one alphabetic character in location 19 Blank for tables 3 and 4 8 Blank for all tables 9 Area Name - All tables Up to 50 characters (including periods, commas, hyphens or parentheses as appropriate), left-justified __________ *U.S. total record is identified by "1" in character 1, and is blank for characters 2 through 20. Codes follow alphabetical order of area name. 1 Page 8 ICPSR 0061 DATA VARIABLE Implied Decimals. All tally fields contain integers. For fractional numbers the decimals are implied. A ".1" in parentheses after an item title indicates one implied decimal. A "$.01" would indicate dollars and cents. On the other hand "100" would indicate data in hundreds. Field 3 is sample data, so as to be consistent with the characteristics that follow. [2] Base-figure, count of persons 5 years old and over, is shown for each area in Appendix C of the Data Book. [3] Base figure, count of married couples, is shown for each area in Appendix C of the Data Book. [4] Total white collar workers is the sum of fields 49 and 50. [5] Includes members of Armed Forces; see Appendix C of Data Book for total workers during census week. [6] Tables 4 and 5 differ on their contents in item 262. Table 5 (unincorporated places) shows median family income for white families, table 4, for families of Spanish heritage [7] Excludes inmates of institutions, military personnel living in barracks, college students living in dormitories, and unrelated individuals under 14 years old. [8] Includes children and parents or caretakers in families where needs of adults were considered in determining amount of aid. [9] For total units including vacant seasonal and migratory units, see Appendix B (not available for urbanized areas) [10] Counts of vacant year-round units for-sale-only and for rent are shown in Appendix C. [11] For table 4 (urbanized areas) only, this figure is for all year-round housing units rather than for occupied units. [12] Data in table 2 and 3 (Counties and SMSA's) are based on the 1967 Census of Governments and represent totals for all local governments - not only the county government but also any municipalities, school districts, etc. within the county. Data in table 6 (Cities) are based on the survey of city government finances for 1969-70, and refer only to the municipal government. [13] Expenditure figures for cities (table 6) include all general expenditures; the figure for counties and SMSA's include only direct general expenditures (see page xli of the Data Book). [14] Debt figures for cities (table 6) include all debt obligations while the figures for counties and SMSA's include only general debt outstanding (see page xli of the Data Book.) [15] For counties and SMSA's, government employment and payroll figures refer to totals for all local governments in October, 1967. For cities the figures refer only to the municipal government, for October, 1970. 1 ICPSR 0061 Page 23 [16] Total includes types of offences not shown separately.
