Funding for Secondary Data Analysis
Funding opportunities for secondary analysis of NACJD data are available through both of our federal sponsors.
Information about funding from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the American Statistical Association can be found on the BJS Web site at http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/funding.htm.
Information about funding from the National Institute of Justice Data Resources Program can be found in the NIJ solicitation at http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/nij/funding.htm.
Online Analysis Using the Data Analysis System (DAS)
Introduction to Online Analysis
A selection of NACJD data collections is available for online data analysis. This means that users can perform the following tasks without having to download the entire collection and importing it into a statistical package:
Search for variables of interest in a dataset
Review frequencies or summary statistics of key variables to determine what further analyses are appropriate
Review frequencies or summary statistics for missing data
Produce simple summary statistics for reports
Create statistical tables from raw data
Create a subset of cases or variables from a particularly large collection to save downloading time and space on a personal computer
Features of Online Data Analysis System
This online data analysis system uses the Survey Documentation and Analysis (SDA) program developed and maintained by the Computer-assisted Survey Methods Program at the University of California, Berkeley. The online documentation for this system is available at http://sda.berkeley.edu:7502/document.htm.
The following features of the online data analysis system are currently available:
Browse the codebook for a dataset
Perform certain statistical procedures, such as:
List values of individual cases
Frequencies
Crosstabulations
Comparisons of means
Correlation matrix
Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression
Manipulate variables
Recode variables
Compute new variables
List newly created variables
Create custom subsets of selected variables and cases
Download the entire collection or a customized subset, including:
ASCII data file
SAS, SPSS, or Stata data definition statements
Codebook, questionnaire, or other documentation
NACJD Collections Available for Use with Data Analysis System
The following NACJD data collections are available for use with the online data analysis system. The datasets have been topically organized to faciliate ease of use.
Variable-Level Searching
This feature searches the question text and variable and value labels for variables across all NACJD or ICPSR studies that are available for online analysis.
Here are some general guideline for using the variable-level search below:
- Searches are not case-sensitive.
- Quotation marks are interpreted literally - don't use them.
- Only whole words are matched - no wildcards or partial words.
- Try different forms of the search term or use synonyms (e.g., employ, employment, job, work).
- Be patient. This program searches thousands of variables and, therefore, it is sometimes slow.
- For more detailed information, see How to Search for Specific Variables
Quick Tables
A new addition to the online analysis component of NACJD is now available for select studies. The new feature is called Quick Tables and it allows users to produce analytic tables by choosing from among pre-selected high-interest variables presented in drop-down menus. Quick Tables is now available for the following data collections.
Role of Stalking in Domestic Violence Crime Reports Generated by the Colorado Springs Police Department, 1998 (ICPSR 3142)
Survey of Prosecutors' Views on Children and Domestic Violence in the United States, 1999 (ICPSR 3103)
