Dynamics of Population Aging in ECE Countries

The National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (NACDA) at ICPSR announces the availability of eight microdata census samples assembled under a project entitled "The Dynamics of Population Aging in ECE Countries." This project was conducted by the Population Activities Unit of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, and was funded by the National Institute on Aging and the United Nations Population Fund. The datasets currently available are from Bulgaria, 1992 (ICPSR 2200); the Czech Republic, 1991 (ICPSR 6857); Estonia, 1989 (ICPSR 6780); Finland, 1990 (ICPSR 6797); Latvia, 1989 (ICPSR 2572); Lithuania, 1989 (ICPSR 3952); Romania, 1992 (ICPSR 6900); and (Turkey, 1990 (ICPSR 3292).

These data were prepared for dissemination through NACDA with funding from the National Institute on Aging. Because of confidentiality restrictions, these data will be made available only to individuals who sign and return a Pledge of Confidentiality. ORs cannot order the data for campus-wide use; each user must sign and return an individual Pledge of Confidentiality. The Pledge of Confidentiality form can be obtained here or from ICPSR User Support or through the NACDA section of the ICPSR Web site. The completed pledge must then be mailed back to ICPSR User Support at:

ICPSR User Support
P.O. Box 1248
Ann Arbor, MI 48106-1248

or via email at netmail@icpsr.umich.edu.

After receiving the pledge, ICPSR will mail the user a CD-ROM containing the data and documentation. If users are unable to use a CD-ROM, other arrangements may be made with User Support. There is no cost to the individual for these data.

The goal of the data collection effort was to create a set of cross-nationally comparable microdata samples based on the 1990 national population and housing censuses in countries of Europe and North America, and to use these samples to study the social and economic condition of older persons. The samples are designed to allow research on a wide range of issues related to aging, as well as other social issues. Additional information about these collections is available through the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe's Population Activities Unit, which includes a "Technicalia" page where announcements about potential problems with the current versions of the data sets will be posted and from which patches (if available) can be downloaded.

Questions about these data may be directed to the NACDA staff at (734) 998-9820 or ICPSR User Support at (734) 998-9799.
