Dalmas A. Taylor Memorial Summer Minority Policy Fellowship

The purpose of this award is to honor the memory of Dalmas Taylor, who passed away during his term as President of SPSSI. Dr. Taylor had been involved for many years with SPSSI. In addition, he was instrumental in establishing the Minority Fellowship at the American Psychological Association and in increasing the APA's attention to inclusion of people of color. This fellowship is administered in conjunction with APA's Minority Fellowship Office, and provides an opportunity for a graduate student of color to work on public policy issues in Washington, DC.

Eligibility

Applicants must be a graduate student in good standing who is a member of an ethnic minority group (including, but not limited to, African American, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander) and/or has demonstrated a commitment to a career in psychology or a related field with a focus on ethnic minority issues.

Awards and Criteria

The summer stipend will be $3000 plus housing and travel funds. We will also assist the successful candidate in finding housing in Washington.

The application should include:

  1. A cover page stating your name, institution, address, telephone number, fax number (if applicable), and email address.
  2. A 3-page statement with detailed information that includes:
    1. reason for your interest in this fellowship
    2. your previous and current research experiences
    3. indication of your interest in ethnic minority psychological issues
    4. statement of how this fellowship would contribute to your career goals
  3. Two letters of recommendation
  4. Current curriculum vitae

Second Place Winner of ICPSR Student Paper Competition Uses MDRC Data

The second place winner of the ICPSR student paper competition, Jonathan Robert Young, used National Health Interview Survey, 2002 data for his paper entitled "Vaccinating the Next Generation: Are Children with Foreign-Born Mothers Less Likely to Receive Recommended Immunizations?".

2007-2008 Postdoctoral Fellowship Position at the Department of African American Studies, University of Illinois at Chicago

PROGRAM

The African American Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago assists faculty studying the African American experience in furthering their academic careers. For scholars committed to university teaching and the study of race, this fellowship program provides a stipend, an appointment as postdoctoral research associate in the department, office space, close association with faculty at the university, and assistance in advancing the fellow's program of research and development as a productive scholar.

ELIGIBILITY

An applicant must demonstrate promise for a tenure-track appointment at colleges or universities, must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and must have received a doctorate or appropriate terminal degree within the past five years (since 2002), or have completed this requirement by June prior to the beginning of the fellowship year. The primary research focus must be in African American and/or African Diaspora Studies. We welcome applications from all disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields, but especially encourage applications from those in the social sciences or allied professional fields.

CONDITIONS

A fellowship appointment is made for one twelve-month period. Recipients of the fellowship must be in residence at the University of Illinois at Chicago campus for the duration of the award period. In addition to pursuing their research projects, fellows will be expected to participate in the intellectual life of the department, deliver one public lecture based on their research during the fellowship year, a departmental seminar on a work-in-progress, and may be asked (depending on departmental need) to teach one course for the department during the academic year.

STIPEND AND ALLOWANCES

Pending budgetary approval, the stipend for the twelve-month period is $35,000. In addition, $5,000 will be provided for relocating expenses and research and travel expenses. Full fringe benefits will be available during the twelve-month appointment period.

APPLICATION

Candidates should submit in triplicate all of the following (postmarked no later than January 8, 2007).

  1. a current curriculum vitae.
  2. a letter detailing the research project to be undertaken during the fellowship.
  3. a sample of scholarly writing.
  4. three letters of recommendation (including one letter from the dissertation advisor).

If there is currently someone on the African American Studies faculty with whom the candidate would like to work, the faculty member should be identified in the letter of application.

EVALUATION AND SELECTION

The Department of African American Studies faculty evaluates applications. Notification of our selection decision will be mailed in late February.

Undergraduate Internship Program

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), the world's largest archive of digital social science data, is now accepting applications for its annual summer internship program for undergraduates that will take place from June 11, 2007 to August 17, 2007.

Summer Interns will work in a UNIX and Windows environment and gain experience using statistical programs such as SAS, SPSS, and Stata to check data. Data processing skills will be applied to prepare social science data for permanent archiving and distribution for secondary analysis; preserving respondent anonymity; and composing descriptions of data collections. To qualify for this opportunity, applicants should have undergraduate standing and completion of sophomore year in a social science major. In addition, strong academic credentials, knowledge of a statistical software package and previous relevant social science research experience via work or class project.

Interested individuals should submit a complete packet of a cover letter, resume, a writing sample, and two letters of recommendation by the application deadline, January 5, 2007.

Undergraduate Research Paper Competition

ICPSR Director Myron Gutmann announced a new annual event that will take place at the beginning of the academic year -- the ICPSR Undergraduate Research Paper Competition.

The purpose of the competition is to highlight exemplary undergraduate student research papers based on quantitative data. The objective is to encourage undergraduates to explore the social sciences by means of critical analysis of a topic supported by quantitative analysis of a dataset(s) held within the ICPSR archive and presented in written form.

Up to three cash prizes will be awarded. The winner will receive a monetary award of $1,000. Second place receives $750 and third place $500.

The deadline for paper submission is January 31, 2007.

NIH Research Supplements for Underrepresented Minorities

In an effort to improve the substantive basis of its data holding and its research scope, MDRC encourages minority faculty or post-doctoral scholars to write a grant supplement to existing National Institutes of Health-funded grants awarded to ICPSR. NIH offers support for minority scholars through the program entitled "Research Supplements for Underrepresented Minorities." Additional information is available through the NIH Web site.
