Applying for Restricted Data

Each data collection in the ICPSR Archive has been examined to ensure that the contents of the collection do not violate explicit or implicit pledges of confidentiality given to respondents or research subjects. Data items that could be used to identify individual respondents are typically removed, masked, or collapsed in the public-use versions of the datasets prepared by ICPSR and released to the research community.

Modifying a dataset for reasons of confidentiality can sometimes compromise the research potential of the data. In these instances, ICPSR provides a restricted-use dataset to an individual researcher for a specific time period based on agreements we establish with the data provider.

Special Forms

Please note that some studies have additional restrictions and require users to fill out special forms, as described below:

  • The Community Tracking Study (CTS) and related surveys require users to fill out special forms that can be found on the HMCA Web site.

  • A number of studies acquired in conjunction with the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD) also have additional restrictions. The NACJD Web site offers an explanation of these restrictions, as well as a list of restricted studies.
