Dr. Margo Anderson discusses challenges to disclosure and the confidentiality of data
On November 1, 2005 Dr. Margo Anderson of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee presented her work on the historic challenges to disclosure and the confidentiality of data and how this lead to the development of present day policies on confidentiality within the federal government. Entitled "Statistical Confidentiality: Origins and Practices and Why they are Relevant for Survey Researchers Today", the talk was hosted by Eleanor Singer, the PI of Informed Consent and Perceptions of Risk and Harm in Survey Participation project and sponsored by Robert Groves as part of the SRC Lecture Series. Dr Anderson has developed a website with links and information on the history of confidentiality and disclosure issues which has been added to the HSP Related Sites page.
The Population Association of America
At the 2005 Meeting of the Population Association of America (PAA), Myron Gutmann, principal investigator of the Program Project on Human Subject Protection, will be the lead author in an HSP presentation at Session 113: Confidentiality and Spatially Explicit Data. The paper is entitled "Providing Spatial Data for Secondary Analysis: Issues and Current Practices."
PSC Student Research Forum, University of Michigan (Feb 9, 2005)
HSP Investigators presented an overview of their core projects at a PSC Student Research Forum sponsored by the Population Studies Center at the Institute for Social Research. Eleanor Singer, Trivellore Raghunathan, JoAnne McFarland O'Rourke and James McNally also discussed ongoing research into various aspects of disclosure and confidentiality issues and how the research associated with the HSP project could befit student research.
Statistical Disclosure Control for Data Confidentiality, University of Wisconsin
On November 10-12, 2004, Project Four Director James McNally participated in a two day workshop on disclosure issues hosted by University of Wisconsin's Center for Demography of Health and Aging. Entitled "Statistical Disclosure Control for Data Confidentiality," the workshop provided participants with an understanding of the theoretical mathematical aspects of statistical disclosure control and the application of these methods using the ARGUS software.
