Notice to Users About Security Warning Messages When Opening CrimeStat Program Files
The CrimeStat software has been checked and verified by ICPSR. To install it on your computer, there are two ways to extract the files and run the program. When you click on the zip file, you are given a choice of saving the zip file or opening it.
If you decide to save the zip file to a directory, when you extract the files and then click on the CrimeStat.hlp file, a message will appear that says:
"This file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher. You should only run software from publishers you trust."
Uncheck the box that says "Always ask before opening this file" and click on the 'Run' button. Close down the help menu after it appears. Next, repeat the same procedure with the CrimeStat.exe file. From now on, the program should open without producing that message.
Option 2 (recommended):
If you decide to open it, extract the individual files to a directory. Depending on which browser you use, the security message will not appear when you open CrimeStat.exe or the CrimeStat.hlp file. For example, it does not appear in Mozilla Firefox but does appear in Internet Explorer. If the message does appear, follow the instructions in Option 1.
